Filmmaker

Amie is an accomplished documentary filmmaker and digital rights activist. Her award-winning work has focused on giving voice to the margins, while pushing filmic conventions. From films focused on women workers and labor unions, to training young female HIV+ citizen journalists in Soweto, Amie’s work drives creative ideologies shaped for a globalized world in constant flux. Her feature documentary films have been financed by and broadcast on PBS, Al Jazeera English, BBC, and CBC, winning numerous awards, including the IDA David Wolper, Paul Robeson, SONY/Streisand Award for emerging female filmmakers, and the MacArthur Foundation Peace Grant.  Her credits include: UNCOMMON GROUND (1998) FALLON NV: DEADLY OASIS; (2001) ONE DAY LONGER, (2002) STRIPPED AND TEASED: TALES FROM LAS VEGAS WOMEN, (2004) AMASAN: WOMEN OF THE SEAS, (2008)  NO SWEAT, (2009) and the recetly released WE ARE WISCONSIN, about the very first Occupy Action in the United States.  www.balmaidenfilms.com  Amie is also the co-founder of Global Girl Media, an all-female digital start-up and non-profit organization that trains under-served teenage girls in new media journalism, and distributes their work on transmedia platforms.  Founded to address the glaring lack of women in power positions in new media, GGM launched during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and has projects in Morocco, South Africa, Los Angeles and Chicago. www.globalgirlmedia.org.
